  • Applications

m‑Xylene (a principal component of mixed xylenes, CAS 1330‑20‑7) is used mainly as an intermediate: oxidation to isophthalic acid for PET bottles, fibers and polyester resins, can and powder coatings; production of trimellitic anhydride for high‑temperature plasticizers, wire enamels and coating resins; and ammoxidation/hydrogenation to isophthalonitrile then m‑xylylenediamine for epoxy curing agents, MXD6 polyamides and gas‑barrier packaging; it also serves as an aromatic solvent for inks, paints, adhesives, degreasing, and rubber/leather processing; a component of cleaning‑solvent blends and a carrier for agrochemicals; a feedstock for dyes/pigments, lubricant additives and specialty chemicals; present in gasoline blending (via mixed xylenes) due to high octane; recoverable by distillation and used as an analytical reference; with operations requiring VOC control, explosion‑proof handling, good ventilation, and compliance with exposure limits, residual specifications and environmental regulations.
