    (S)-(−)-Limonene, CAS 5989-54-8, is a naturally occurring orange-scented monoterpene whose versatility spans flavour, fragrance, materials and green chemistry; in food and beverages it serves as a citrus flavour enhancer, taste modulator for confectionery, soft drinks and sauces and as an antioxidant nutraceutical ingredient; in cosmetics, shampoos, perfumes and personal-care products it imparts a fresh clean aroma while masking unwanted odours; as a biorenewable, fast-evaporating solvent it replaces toluene and xylene in inks, coatings, industrial cleansers and 3-D-print resin strippers; in agriculture it operates as a botanical insecticide, nematicide, fungicide and repellent; in synthetic chemistry the S-configured chiron is exploited as a starting material for enantioselective production of pharmaceuticals, biodegradable polymers and nanomaterials; its ability to dissolve polystyrene enables closed-loop plastic recycling, and its antimicrobial, antiviral and deodorising properties inspire research into natural pharmaceuticals, active packaging and indoor air fresheners.

Specification
Oxidation products of Limonene, especially hydroperoxides, have been demonstrated to be potent sensitizers.
d-, l- and dl-Limonene and natural products containing substantial amounts of it, should only be used when the level of (hydro)peroxides is kept to the lowest practical level, for instance by adding antioxidants at the time of production. The addition of 0.1% BHT or α-Tocopherol for example has shown great efficiency. Such products should have a peroxide value of less than 20 millimoles per liter, determined according to the IFRA analytical method for the determination of the peroxide value, which can be downloaded from the IFRA website (www.ifrafragrance.org).
