Applications
Labd-14-ene, 8,13-epoxy-, (13R)- (CAS 596-84-9) is a labdane-type diterpenoid epoxide used mainly in two domains: (1) fragrance and cosmetics, where labdane epoxides are valued for warm woody/amber tonalities and as fixatives that extend longevity in fine fragrance, personal care, detergents, and candles; it also serves as a key chiral intermediate for semisynthesis of ambergris/ambroxide-type odorants and other labdane derivatives via directed epoxide opening, selective redox steps, and rearrangements; (2) research and analytics, where it functions as a chiral building block in terpenoid chemistry, a substrate for biotransformations (epoxide hydrolase to diols), a model to probe epoxide-opening mechanisms and stereocontrol, and a reference standard for GC–MS/chiral GC/NMR and retention indexing; additionally, it is explored for bioactivity (antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, odor modulation) and formulated in microencapsulation/controlled-release systems to enhance stability and performance in household applications.
