Applications
Hexyltrimethoxysilane (CAS 3069-19-0) functions primarily as a silane coupling agent and surface modifier for inorganic–organic interfaces. In coatings, adhesives and sealants, it hydrolyzes and condenses to form siloxane bonds that improve adhesion between glass, silica and metal oxides and organic polymers, enhancing durability. It also acts as a hydrophobic surface modifier, imparting water-repellency to glass, ceramics, fillers and coating substrates through its hexyl moiety. Additionally, it is used to treat silica fillers and pigments to boost dispersion and compatibility in polymer matrices, enabling better composite performance. In sol-gel and related formulations, it serves as a network-forming precursor to create hydrophobic silica-containing coatings and inks. As a processing aid in specialty coatings and sealants, it supports network formation and moisture resistance by forming covalent Si–O–Si linkages at interfaces.
