Applications
Guaiacol butyrate (CAS 4112-92-9), also known as 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl butyrate, is a fragrant ester with a sweet smoky-vanillic note that finds wide application: in the flavour industry it enriches or rebuilds the aromatic profile of roasted coffee, cocoa, black tea, caramel, candy, smoked meats, BBQ sauces, alcoholic and soft drinks; in perfumes and cosmetics it is blended into woody, oriental and gourmand accords to add warm depth and serves as a long-lasting fixative; in pharmaceuticals and veterinary medicine the molecule is explored as a slow-release pro-drug of guaiacol, offering expectorant action, reduced gastric irritation and taste masking, and is also an intermediate in the synthesis of syringates, vanillates and related phenoxy compounds; in materials science it works as an antioxidant, heat stabiliser and UV absorber for PVC, polystyrene and natural rubber, extending service life and limiting yellowing; in biochemical research it is employed as a model substrate for esterase and lipase assays and for pharmacokinetic studies of ester-based delivery systems; moreover, its good solubility in organic media and moderate boiling point make it a useful solvent adjuvant and odour carrier in tobacco, agrochemicals and printing inks, where only a few ppm impart a strong sensory impact.
