Applications
Geranylgeraniol (GGOH, CAS 24034-73-9) is a C20 isoprenoid (diterpenoid) alcohol used primarily as a biochemical tool and as a precursor of geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate to restore protein prenylation (e.g., Rho/Rac/Rab GTPases) when the mevalonate pathway is inhibited by statins or nitrogen-bisphosphonates; it is applied to rescue osteoclast and soft-tissue functions in studies of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, to assess and mitigate zoledronate toxicity and statin-associated effects, and as a substrate/control for geranylgeranyltransferases and other prenyltransferases; in organic synthesis and biocatalysis it serves as a starting material to generate geranylgeranyl diphosphate, diterpenoid/meroterpenoid derivatives, and for chemo(enzymatic) protein geranylgeranylation; in flavor-fragrance and cosmetic contexts it is explored as an isoprenoid aroma component and potential functional ingredient, with in vitro reports of antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities.
