Applications
Geranic acid (CAS 4698-08-2) is an unsaturated monoterpenoid carboxylic acid widely used as a versatile intermediate for the synthesis of fragrances and cosmetic ingredients (creating, modulating, and stabilizing notes via its esters and salts), for pharmaceutical and biotech applications (forming salts/esters and, notably, biocompatible ionic/deep eutectic liquids such as choline geranate to enhance drug solubility, transdermal permeation, and provide antimicrobial/biofilm-disrupting action in topical formulations), for agrochemical and pest-management uses (a precursor to pheromones/attractants and derivatives with insect-repellent or antifungal activity), and as a functional handle for derivatization in materials and academic studies on conjugated dienoic acids; it is also employed as an analytical reference material and occasionally as a pH-adjusting component in formulations that benefit from a biocompatible terpenoid acid.
