  • Applications

Ethyl lactate (CAS 97-64-3) is a bio-based solvent obtained from fermentation of lactic acid and ethanol that is widely used in coatings, paints, printing inks and ink-jet formulations because of its moderate evaporation rate and strong solvency for nitrocellulose, acrylics and polyesters; it serves as a safe cleaner for electronic devices, semiconductor parts, 3-D printers and metal surfaces by replacing hazardous chlorinated solvents; in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics it functions as an extraction solvent, flavor carrier and emulsifier for creams, lotions and perfumes due to its low toxicity and rapid biodegradation; in agriculture it acts as a pesticide carrier, penetration enhancer and micro-emulsion solvent; the ester is also FDA-approved as a flavor additive imparting fruity, dairy and wine notes to foods, beverages, yogurt and confectionery; beyond these roles ethyl lactate is a green reaction medium for enzyme-catalyzed synthesis, PLA polymerization, oilfield treatment, biodegradable polymer plasticization and even an electrolyte component in lithium batteries, exemplifying the shift from NMP, DMF, acetone and toluene toward sustainable, health-conscious and environmentally friendly solvent solutions.
