Applications
Ethanethiol (ethyl mercaptan, CAS 75-08-1) is a volatile liquid with an extremely strong odor that is used mainly as an odorant for natural gas and LPG to enable leak detection, and also serves as a precursor in organic synthesis for producing sulfur-containing compounds, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and rubber additives; it is additionally employed as a calibration standard in chromatographic analysis, a trace flavoring agent, a controlled-ignition modifier in fuels, and a chain-transfer or surface-modifying agent in polymer and metal treatments, although strict safety procedures are essential because of its toxicity and flammability.
