Applications
Epsilon-Cadinene (ε-Cadinene, CAS 25548-04-3) is a sesquiterpene hydrocarbon with a warm woody, resinous, slightly spicy odor, used primarily as a fragrance ingredient in fine fragrances, candles, soaps, and personal/home care to add woody–balsamic, smoky, tobacco or incense facets and to modulate chypre/amber accords; at very low levels it is also applied as a flavoring to impart natural woody–spicy nuances to beverages, confectionery, and savory products; analytically, ε-cadinene serves as a reference/marker for GC–MS retention index calibration, essential-oil fingerprinting, authenticity assessment, and adulteration detection of cadinene-rich botanicals (e.g., certain Juniperus, Cupressus, and patchouli oils); in research it is investigated for antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities and for roles in insect attraction/repellence, supporting the development of bio-based aromas, eco-friendly crop protection leads, and slow-release fragrance materials (microencapsulation, polymer embedding), and as a biochemical tracer in plant terpenoid metabolism and biosynthesis studies.
