Applications
(E)-1-(3,4-Dimethoxyphenyl)butadiene (DMPBD, CAS 75560-74-6) is used primarily as an organic building block and model substrate in research due to its electron-rich conjugated pi-system: a reactive diene in Diels–Alder and conjugate-addition sequences for assembling cyclic frameworks or extending carbon backbones; a precursor to lignan/neolignan, benzodioxole, and stilbene-like chromophores; a unit for organic electronic/photonic materials (conjugated oligomers and polymers, hole-transport layers, bandgap tuning via the dimethoxy donors); a probe to study catalytic selectivity (directing effects, radical/ionic additions and E/Z isomerization) and pericyclic kinetics; a UV–Vis/fluorescence reference with characteristic absorption; and it is sometimes screened in drug discovery as an electron-rich aromatic scaffold for in vitro SAR, strictly for research use only and not for pharmaceutical, food, or cosmetic applications.
