  • Applications

Dimethylolpropionic acid (CAS 4767-03-7) is primarily used as a functional monomer and stabilizer in polyurethane chemistry. It provides two hydroxyl groups and one carboxyl group, enabling it to act as an internal emulsifier and ionic stabilizer for waterborne polyurethane dispersions; after neutralization with amines, the carboxylate groups improve dispersion stability. It is also used as a crosslinking/chain-extending agent in polyurethane and polyurea systems to tailor film hardness and hydrolytic stability. As a building block for waterborne resins used in coatings and adhesives, DMPA introduces carboxyl functionality for bonding, adhesion, and film formation. It can serve as an intermediate for specialty polymers and reactive polyurethane chemistries, with usage governed by local regulations and formulation limits.
