Dimethyl Azelate is used as a plasticizer for polymers, especially PVC and related polymers; it also serves as a solvent and processing aid in coatings, paints, and inks; as a diester it acts as a key intermediate in the synthesis of azelate esters and other specialty azelate derivatives for the plastics and rubber industries; it can be used as a component in alkyd and polyester resin systems for coatings and finishes; and it may serve as an intermediate for other industrial applications such as lubricant-related esters or functional ester products.
