Dicyclopentadiene is primarily used as a chemical building block in polymer and resin manufacture: it serves as the feedstock for polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD) thermoset resins produced by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), which are applied in high-performance coatings, sealants, adhesives, and fiber-reinforced composites; it can be cracked to cyclopentadiene, a fundamental starting material for cyclopentadienyl chemistry and for norbornene-type monomers used in specialty polymers and high-temperature resins; as a reactive monomer it enhances rigidity and chemical resistance in unsaturated polyester and related resin systems; and it functions as a versatile intermediate for producing norbornene derivatives and other monomers used in advanced materials for electronics, automotive, and aerospace applications.
