    (-)-delta-Selinene (CAS 28624-23-9) is a natural sesquiterpene hydrocarbon found in many essential oils; in fragrance and flavor applications it is used or investigated as a woody, dry, warm-spicy, slightly herbal note to fine‑tune accords in woody/smoky perfumes, cosmetics, candles, personal‑care products and household cleaners, and at trace levels it can contribute vegetal–spicy nuances in flavors; in botanical QC and essential‑oil analytics, the compound (and its (-) enantiomer) serves as a chemomarker for plant source authentication, adulteration detection, and as a reference standard for chiral GC-MS/GC×GC method development; in bioactivity research it is examined for antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and insect‑repellent properties and as a sesquiterpene scaffold for screening, though it is not an approved drug; in environmental and plant‑physiology studies it is used as a standard to model plant VOC emissions and atmospheric oxidation leading to secondary organic aerosol; for formulation and safety, it is volatile and oxidation‑prone, so it is typically stabilized with antioxidants or microencapsulation, dosed at low levels, and used in compliance with IFRA and applicable flavor/fragrance regulations.
