    delta-Patchoulene (&-alpha), CAS 53823-16-8, is a sesquiterpene hydrocarbon found in patchouli oil, used mainly as a fragrance ingredient with woody-earthy, resinous and slightly spicy facets to add depth, diffusion and base-note stability in woody/amber fine fragrances, soaps, detergents, scented candles and personal-care products, and as a patchouli-note modifier; in research it serves as an analytical reference standard (GC-MS/GC-FID) for quantifying, authenticating and detecting adulteration of essential oils, and as a substrate in oxidation/hydrogenation and catalytic transformations to access oxidized derivatives (epoxides, alcohols, ketones) for aroma synthesis, as well as a model for plant sesquiterpene biosynthesis; direct use in foods or health therapy is limited, and cosmetic applications should follow safety/IFRA guidance, noting the volatility, flammability and potential skin-sensitization of terpene hydrocarbons.
