Applications
Decyl propionate (CAS 5454-19-3) is a medium-chain propionate ester with a soft fruity odour (pear, peach nuance) used as a fragrance ingredient in fine fragrances, personal care products, household cleaners and deodorants; as a flavouring note in foods and beverages where permitted; and as a low-volatility solvent/co-solvent and carrier for aromas or actives, an emollient and spreading agent in creams, lotions and cosmetics to improve solubility, spreadability and a dry, non-greasy sensory; it also serves as a coalescent/plasticizing aid in coatings, inks and adhesives to enhance flow and reduce odour, and finds use in light lubricants and industrial cleaners for its moderate viscosity, relatively high flash point and mild odour, being valued for broad compatibility with oils, silicones and many polymers, a tendency toward biodegradability and a generally favourable safety profile, with selection and dosage guided by local regulations and formulation stability needs.
