Applications
Cyperene (CAS 2387-78-2) is a natural sesquiterpene hydrocarbon found in Cyperus essential oils and other aromatic plants; in practice it is used mainly as a fragrance ingredient imparting warm woody–earthy nuances, adding depth and mild substantivity in fine fragrances, body care, and home scent products (candles, diffusers) with a natural profile; in flavors it occurs as a natural constituent of essential oils used to build earthy–smoky, spicy notes in beverages, confectionery, and savory snacks (subject to regional regulations); it is also employed in R&D as a GC/GC–MS reference standard for profiling and quantifying essential oils, chemotaxonomic fingerprinting, and botanical raw‑material quality control; preclinical studies explore antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti‑inflammatory activities and its value as a scaffold/lead for synthesizing new bioactives and aroma materials, as well as a volatile ecological marker, while any direct therapeutic use requires further evidence and approval.
