Applications
Cyclooctadecanone (CAS 6907-37-5) is a macrocyclic ketone with a soft, slightly animalic musky odor, used primarily in the fragrance and cosmetics industry as a high-end musk note and long-lasting fixative in fine perfumery, personal care, and (at premium tiers) home products; in organic synthesis it serves as a versatile macrocyclic scaffold for preparing derivatives (oximes/hydrazones, the corresponding alcohol by reduction, lactones via Baeyer–Villiger oxidation, or α-functionalized analogs) to tune olfactory profiles, access macrocyclic musk/lactone building blocks, and pheromone-like compounds; in research it is employed as a GC–MS/HPLC reference standard for identifying macrocyclic ketones, as a model molecule to study conformational flexibility, hydrophobic interactions, and crystal packing of large rings, and as a starting point in supramolecular and soft-materials exploration; additionally, owing to a generally favorable safety and environmental profile relative to some nitro or polycyclic musks, it is of interest for “green” fragrance formulation and more sustainable fragrance delivery systems.
