Applications
Cryolite (CAS 15096-52-3, Na3AlF6) is primarily used as a flux in the electrolytic production of aluminum (the Hall-Héroult process), lowering the melting point of alumina and improving electrolyte conductivity. It is also used in the glass and ceramic industries as a flux to modify melting behavior and processing of frits and glazes, and in inorganic synthesis as a fluoride source for preparing aluminum fluoride compounds or other fluoride-based chemistries, serving as an additive fluoride in various metalworking or ceramic processing workflows.
