Applications
Chromium Trioxide (CAS 1333-82-0) is predominantly used as a strong oxidizer in metal surface treatment and protective coatings, including chrome plating baths and chromic acid-based anodizing processes for aluminum and steel to improve adhesion and corrosion resistance; it also serves as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis (e.g., Jones oxidation) to oxidize primary and secondary alcohols to carbonyl compounds and carboxylic acids; in cleaning and pretreatment steps, chromic acid baths are used for surface cleaning and etching of metals and glass prior to coatings or bonding; it is a key intermediate/precursor in the production of chromium-containing chemicals and related reagents; use is subject to local regulations and formulation limits.
