Applications
Chlorosulfonic acid is a highly reactive sulfonating and chlorinating agent used to introduce sulfonyl groups into organic substrates. In industry it is commonly employed to prepare arylsulfonyl chlorides (and related sulfonate derivatives) that serve as key intermediates in the manufacture of dyes and pigments, and in pharmaceutical and agrochemical syntheses. It also enables conversion of alcohols and other nucleophiles into sulfonate esters or sulfonyl chlorides, which can be hydrolyzed to sulfonic acids for surfactants and resin applications. In polymer, coating, and adhesive technology, it is used to functionalize polymers and to produce sulfonated resins and ion-exchange materials, supporting membrane and coating formulations as well as specialty binders.
