Cedrene (unknown isomer), CAS 11028-42-5, is a cedarwood sesquiterpene hydrocarbon used mainly in perfumery and fragranced consumer products to deliver a dry woody–cedar note in fine fragrance, personal care (soaps, shampoos, deodorants), household cleaners, fabric care, candles and air fresheners, where it reinforces dry-woody, leather, tobacco, amber and balsamic accords, helps mask malodors, and contributes some persistence due to moderate volatility; at very low levels it may be used in flavorings to add warm woody nuances where permitted; in aroma chemistry it serves as a feedstock/intermediate to prepare oxygenated sesquiterpene derivatives and to tailor cedarwood oil profiles; analytically it is used as a reference/marker for identity, purity testing of cedarwood oil and as a VOC tracer from conifers; in research it has been investigated as a contributor to the insect-repellent and antimicrobial properties observed for cedarwood oil; in industrial practice it is typically obtained by fractional distillation of cedarwood oil, stored under inert/low-light conditions to minimize autoxidation and odor shift, and used in compliance with IFRA and local regulatory limits for fragrance ingredients.
