Applications
Camphane (CAS 464-15-3), also known as bornane, is a bicyclic monoterpene hydrocarbon used mainly in research and synthesis: as a bulky hydrophobic scaffold to access bornyl/isorbornyl and camphor-related derivatives, as an intermediate for selective functionalizations (e.g., halogenation, oxidation) in organic synthesis, as a model to study radical oxidation kinetics and terpene rearrangements, as a substrate for microbial/enzymatic biotransformations of terpenes, as a reference standard and retention-index marker in GC/GC–MS of essential oils and volatile mixtures, and as a steric/hydrophobic modulator in organic materials studies; outside the lab it is only occasionally considered for camphoraceous odor notes or odor modulation due to moderate volatility and relative inertness, with direct commercial use generally limited compared with functionalized monoterpenes.
