Applications
Calcium metal (CAS 7440-70-2) is used in metallurgy as a strong reducing agent and as a deoxidizer and desulfurizer in steelmaking, where small additions help modify sulfide inclusions to improve machinability and surface finish. It is also employed in calciothermic reductions to produce certain metals and intermetallic compounds from oxides or chlorides at high temperature. In organic synthesis, organocalcium reagents derived from calcium metal serve as nucleophiles or bases in specialized carbon–carbon bond-forming reactions. Additionally, calcium is an alloying addition in selected specialty alloys to tailor microstructure and properties for demanding applications.
