    Butyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, also known as butylparaben (CAS 94-26-8), is a widely used paraben preservative valued for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial action against bacteria, yeasts and molds; it is incorporated into skin creams, lotions, shampoos, makeup, deodorants, wet wipes and many other personal-care items, as well as oral and topical pharmaceutical formulations such as syrups, non-aqueous injections, ophthalmic solutions, gels, ointments and lubricants; the compound is further applied in baked goods, sauces, low-alcohol beverages, condiments and food packaging to prolong shelf life, and in industrial metalworking fluids, paints, adhesives, printing inks and lubricating oils to prevent microbial spoilage; it shows optimum efficacy between pH 4-8 and is often blended with methyl- or propylparaben to take advantage of synergistic effects and lower total dosage, typical use levels being 0.02-0.4 %; its low cost, thermal stability and minimal color or odor make it attractive, yet endocrine-disruption concerns have led to concentration limits in the EU, Japan and other markets, requiring manufacturers to comply with current regulations and labeling rules.
