Applications
Butyl (S)-(−)-lactate, also known as n-butyl (S)-2-hydroxypropanoate, is a bio-based lactic ester widely employed as a green solvent in paints, inks and industrial cleaners because of its low evaporation rate, mild odor and rapid biodegradability; its S-(−) stereochemistry offers high enantioselectivity when the compound is used as a chiral building block for pharmaceutical, agrochemical and food-additive synthesis and for chromatographic resolution of optically active substances; in cosmetics it serves as a flavor carrier, sensory enhancer and pigment dispersant; in materials science the ester acts as a viscosity modifier and gloss improver for alkyds, polyurethanes and biopolymer blends, and it is regarded as an environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum-derived solvents in zero-VOC coating systems.
