Applications
Butyl butyryllactate (CAS 7492-70-8) is a low-volatility, bio-based ester derived from lactic acid, butanol and butyric acid; its architecture combines a polar hydroxylated lactate head that dissolves resins, cellulose, acrylics and nitrocellulose with an alkyl tail that ensures compatibility with hydrophobic phases, making it a popular “green” solvent for waterborne architectural and industrial coatings where it levels films, accelerates cure and acts as a coalescent to build flexible, glossy, chemically resistant surfaces; in flexographic, ink-jet and gravure inks it serves as a pigment carrier, evaporation-rate moderator and anti-nozzle-clog additive; in industrial cleaners and electronic degreasers it removes oils, rosin and epoxy residues while remaining readily biodegradable and VOC-compliant; additional uses include plasticizer for PVC, PU and nitrocellulose, reactive diluent for UV-curable resins, mold-release agent, rubber-processing aid, extraction solvent for flavors or pharmaceuticals, component of metalworking fluids, carrier for micro-emulsified agrochemicals, and intermediate in fragrance manufacture thanks to the mild buttery odour characteristic of butyrate esters.
