Applications
Bis(2-mercaptoethyl) sulfide (CAS 3570-55-6) is a difunctional thiol-containing crosslinker used in polymer and coating formulations. It functions as a thiol-epoxy curing agent for epoxies and UV/thermal-curable coatings, enabling network formation via thiol–epoxy and thiol–ene reactions. It is also employed as a chain-transfer/crosslinking agent in radical polymerizations to modulate molecular weight and network properties in systems such as polyurethanes and acrylics that incorporate sulfur. In electronics and surface engineering, the two terminal thiol groups allow binding to metal surfaces, supporting adhesion and interfacial compatibility, including the formation of surface modifiers or self-assembled layers. Additionally, it can serve as an intermediate in organic synthesis to introduce difunctional mercapto groups and to prepare sulfur-containing ligands, and it may be considered for use in adhesives and sealants as a crosslinker, subject to local regulations and formulation limits.
