Applications
Benzyl triethylammonium chloride (CAS 56-37-1) is widely used as a phase-transfer catalyst in biphasic organic syntheses, enabling alkylations, acylations, and other nucleophilic substitutions by shuttling reactive species between aqueous and organic phases. It also functions as a cationic surfactant and formulation additive in coatings, inks, adhesives, and cleaning products, improving wetting, dispersion, and emulsification. In polymer-related processes it can act as an emulsifier or stabilizer for emulsion polymerizations and as a building block for preparing related quaternary ammonium salts. Additionally, it is sometimes employed as a formulation adjuvant in agricultural sprays to enhance spread and retention on plant surfaces, and in textile processing for controlled surface finishes.
