Benzyl Chloride (CAS 100-44-7) is a reactive alkyl halide widely used as a chemical intermediate in synthesis. In practice, it is employed to benzylate substrates to form benzyl ethers or benzylamines, providing protecting groups for alcohol and amine functionalities in pharmaceutical and fine chemical manufacturing. It also serves as a precursor to benzyl alcohol and various benzyl esters used as fragrance and cosmetic ingredients; and as a feedstock for the synthesis of quaternary ammonium compounds, including benzalkonium-type surfactants used in cleaners and disinfectants.
