  • Applications

Antimony trichloride (CAS 10025-91-9) is used primarily as a Lewis acid catalyst in specialized organic synthesis, notably for cationic polymerization of olefins such as isobutylene to polyisobutylene and for Friedel–Crafts alkylation and acylation reactions in industrial manufacturing. It also serves as a chlorinating agent and a precursor to organoantimony reagents, enabling selective halogenation steps and the preparation of other Sb-containing catalysts. In polymers and coatings, SbCl3 acts as a polymerization initiator or catalyst for certain resins and provides a route to Sb-based additives. In electronics and related fields, it may be employed as a precursor for Sb-containing compounds used in thin films and specialty coatings. Its use is subject to local regulations and formulation limits.
