Applications
Antimony pentachloride (CAS 7647-18-9) is primarily used as a strong Lewis acid catalyst in organic synthesis, notably in Friedel–Crafts-type alkylation and acylation and in other selective chlorination steps. It also serves as an intermediate in the production of other antimony-containing halide compounds and related organoantimony derivatives. Additionally, SbCl5 is employed as a catalyst in certain specialty polymerization processes to form or control specific polymer architectures. Its use is subject to local regulations and formulation limits.
