In organic synthesis, it acts as a Lewis acid catalyst and as a reagent for Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley-type reductions of carbonyl compounds using isopropanol as the hydrogen donor. It is also employed as a catalyst or initiator in polyester and other polymerizations, facilitating transesterification and condensation steps. In materials chemistry, it serves as a sol-gel precursor to form alumina (Al2O3) via hydrolysis and condensation, enabling the production of ceramic coatings, thin films, and porous catalysts or adsorbents.
