alpha-Vetispirene (CAS 28908-28-3) is a sesquiterpene hydrocarbon found in vetiver essential oil and related woody–rooty sources; in perfumery it functions as a woody, earthy, smoky, root-like note that adds depth and longevity to fine fragrances and to fragrance bases for cosmetics, soaps, detergents, candles, and air‑care, and it is also used as a reference/marker in essential‑oil quality control and adulteration screening; in research it serves as a GC–MS/GC–O analytical standard and a model substrate for studying sesquiterpene biosynthesis (synthases, microbial biotransformations), for trace‑level aroma quantitation in agricultural products, and it is investigated as a VOC component in chemical ecology and olfactory sensing; in flavor applications it may be used at very low levels to reinforce warm woody backgrounds in formulas featuring vetiver or woods.
