Applications
5-Methylnonanal (CAS 52432-75-4) is a medium-chain, branched aliphatic aldehyde with a fresh aldehydic, slightly fatty citrus-green character, used as a fragrance ingredient to add lift and diffusion in fine fragrances, soaps, detergents, candles, and air-care products; in flavor work it is dosed at very low levels to reinforce citrus peel, apple-pear and waxy nuances in beverages, confectionery, and bakery; in synthesis its reactive carbonyl enables oxime/imine formation, reduction to 5-methylnonanol, or oxidation to the corresponding acid/esters that serve as precursors to surfactants, plasticizers, and lubricants; it is also employed as an analytical reference standard and odor marker in GC/GC-MS studies of volatile aldehydes in foods, fats/oils, cosmetics, and environmental samples, and in research on hydrophobic surface functionalization and polymer materials; typically stored airtight and protected from oxygen/light to minimize autoxidation.
