Applications
5-Hexen-2-one (CAS 109-49-9) is a colorless liquid with a sweet, banana-like odor whose concurrent alkene and ketone functionalities enable wide applicability: in flavours and fragrances it acts as a precursor to fruity esters and complex aroma ingredients for food, cosmetics and tobacco; in pharmaceutical chemistry it is a versatile intermediate for α,β-unsaturated ketone scaffolds, employed in Michael additions and cyclizations yielding pyrazine, pyrrolidin and lactone derivatives; in materials science its double bond allows copolymer grafting with other monomers to enhance adhesion and chemical resistance of epoxy, polyurethane and silicone resins; it is also exploited as an isotopic tracer, a GC/MS analytical standard and a teaching aid for reaction-mechanism demonstrations in academic laboratories.
