Applications
4-Nonanone (CAS 4485-09-0) is a straight-chain, high-boiling ketone used mainly as a synthesis intermediate and as a solvent/co-solvent in specialty formulations: it undergoes selective reduction to 4-nonanol, reductive amination to secondary/tertiary C9 amines, addition of Grignard or organolithium reagents to give tertiary alcohols, and enolate formation for aldol/alkylation to extend carbon frameworks; its oxime/hydrazone derivatives assist purification/identification, and Baeyer–Villiger oxidation can yield propyl–pentyl esters valued in fragrance; owing to moderate polarity and slow evaporation, it is applied to tune drying rate, flow, and film formation in coatings, inks, and adhesives, to extract hydrophobic analytes, and as a processing aid in polymer synthesis; in research it serves as a model substrate for enolization and radical oxidation kinetics of medium-chain ketones and can act as a GC retention-index/calibration candidate or solvent benchmark; additionally, the balanced lipophilicity of the C9 scaffold makes 4-nonanone convenient for building surfactants, specialty lubricants, and ketal/acetal specialty solvents.
