Applications
4-Methylhexan-1-ol (CAS 818-49-5) is a branched C7 fatty alcohol used primarily as a solvent and property modifier in paints, inks, and coatings thanks to its medium evaporation rate and good solvency for resins such as alkyds, acrylics, and nitrocellulose; it also serves as a key intermediate to produce specialty esters (e.g., 4-methylhexyl acrylate/methacrylate, phthalates, adipates) for plasticization, adhesive/coating monomers, and low-odor ester solvents (such as 4-methylhexyl acetate/propionate) for coatings and cleaning; in addition, it is employed to make alcohol ethoxylates and related surfactants for detergency and agrochemical emulsions, to aid pigment dispersion, as an extraction solvent in chemical purification, and as an odor/evaporation-profile modifier in industrial formulations where a robust, broadly compatible, low-odor alcohol is desired.
