  • Applications

4-Ethylguaiacol (CAS 2785-89-9) is an aromatic phenolic compound widely used across analytical chemistry and the food-and-beverage industry, where it serves as a reference standard for monitoring, quantifying and calibrating the smoky, woody and characteristic “Brett” sensory notes in wines, craft beers and roasted coffee; it is also deliberately added in controlled amounts to flavour formulations to recreate warm spicy, slightly charred vanilla profiles that deepen barbecue sauces, smoked meats, chocolate confections, pipe tobacco and niche perfumes; in biological and microbiological work the molecule functions as a marker for Brettanomyces yeast activity and lignin pyrolysis, assisting studies on wood degradation, heritage preservation and wildfire smoke taint in crops, while in synthesis it acts as an intermediate for pharmaceutical candidates and methoxyphenol-containing polymeric materials.
