(3E,6Z)-3,7,11-Trimethyldodeca-1,3,6,10-tetraene (CAS 28973-98-0) is an acyclic sesquiterpene and a configurational isomer of α-farnesene, used primarily in flavor and fragrance compositions for crisp green, apple-like, herbal and light woody notes; as a modifier and booster of green facets in perfumes, personal care and scented cleaners; as a feedstock/precursor that can be hydrogenated to farnesane (C15 isoparaffin) for R&D in bio-based fuels, hydrocarbon base fluids, lubricants and cosmetic emollients; as an analytical reference standard in GC/GC-MS for quantifying plant volatiles (e.g., apple, pear, tea, hops) and in chemical ecology to study plant–insect interactions and semiochemical attractants/repellents; additionally, it serves as a convenient synthetic building block for epoxidation, hydroboration–oxidation, Diels–Alder and other selective functionalizations to access terpenoid derivatives and terpene-based polymer materials; in postharvest research it is employed as a marker/probe to model oxidation processes linked to superficial scald in apples and to assess the efficacy of antioxidants, coatings and storage regimes.
