Applications
3,6-Octadien-1-ol, 3,7-dimethyl- (CAS 7779-06-8) is a fragrance monoterpenoid alcohol used mainly in perfumery as a citrus–floral–herbal note for fine fragrances, soaps, detergents, air care and deodorants; in flavors at trace levels to impart fresh, fruity nuances to beverages, confectionery and baked goods; in specialty chemicals as an intermediate for esterification (e.g., acetate/carbonate esters with tailored odor), epoxidation/oxidation or isomer enrichment to build terpene derivatives; it also appears in insect attractant/monitoring blends and as an analytical reference in atmospheric oxidation studies of monoterpenes; in practice, its conjugated diene makes it prone to oxidation/isomerization, so antioxidants, tight packaging and cool storage are recommended, and use should comply with safety labeling, IFRA guidance and REACH/GHS rules for flammable, irritant substances.
