Applications
3,5,5-Trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one (CAS 18358-53-7) is a bicyclic ketone in the norbornanone family with a characteristic camphoraceous odor, used as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes, deodorizers, personal-care products, and cleaners to impart cool, clean, woody notes and to act as a fixative; it also serves as a versatile synthetic intermediate for building terpenoid/norbornyl frameworks, preparing the corresponding oxime/hydrazone, alcohols, and amines, and as a feedstock for camphor-derived chiral auxiliaries/ligands, camphorquinone-type photoinitiator precursors for UV-curable materials, and bulky modifier/comonomer units that enhance Tg, thermal stability, and chemical resistance of resins; in R&D it is used as a reference standard, a model substrate for reactivity studies of bicyclic ketones, and a convenient starting point to access bioactive scaffolds or novel fragrance ingredients with camphoraceous–woody profiles.
