  • Applications

3,3,5-Trimethylcyclohexanol (CAS 116-02-9) is a colorless, mildly pine-scented primary alcohol used as a versatile building block for fragrances, cosmetics, polymer additives and pharmaceuticals; in the flavour-fragrance sector it contributes a warm resinous-woody note and is often esterified to yield heat-stable perfume ingredients for fine fragrances, deodorants and scented candles; in plastics it reacts via its hydroxyl group with isocyanates or anhydrides to produce flexible polyurethanes, fast-drying alkyd resins, plasticizers and high-temperature lubricants, thereby enhancing impact strength, clarity and ageing resistance of polycarbonate, ABS and PVC; in coatings and printing inks it serves as a co-solvent and active plasticizer that lowers viscosity while improving adhesion to metal substrates; in medicinal chemistry it is a precursor to cyclohexyl derivatives with antifungal and antibacterial activity and a chain-initiator for polyether scaffolds in controlled-release drug systems; the compound is also under study as a phase-transfer catalyst and as an engine-oil additive due to its free-radical-stabilizing performance at elevated temperatures.
