Applications
3-Methylbut-3-enyl benzoate (CAS 5205-12-9, also known as prenyl benzoate) is a benzoate ester with an isoprenyl side chain used in fragrance formulations as a modifier with sweet balsamic–fruity nuances and as a mild fixative to extend odor longevity in fine fragrances, personal care, and home care products; in organic synthesis, its terminal double bond enables epoxidation, hydroboration–oxidation, ozonolysis, and cross-metathesis to access terpenoid-like derivatives, and it serves as an intermediate en route to the corresponding alcohols, aldehydes, acids, and other functionalized benzoates, making it a convenient building block for aroma chemicals and specialty fine chemicals; it is also employed as a reference/retention marker in GC–MS flavor–fragrance libraries, as a model substrate in catalysis studies (transesterification, allylic isomerization), and in pro-fragrance systems that rely on ester hydrolysis.
