  • Applications

DL-4-Hydroxy-3-methoxymandelic acid, better known as vanillylmandelic acid or VMA (CAS 55-10-7), is the terminal metabolite of adrenaline and noradrenaline, therefore it is extensively employed as a biochemical marker in urinary catecholamine tests for the diagnosis and follow-up of pheochromocytoma, neuroblastoma and endocrine-related hypertension; in clinical laboratories it serves as both external and internal standard for the calibration of HPLC, LC-MS/MS and immunoassay kits. In biochemical research, VMA is used to map monoamine metabolic pathways, to determine COMT and MAO enzyme activity, and to build oxidative-stress cell models. Owing to its reactive vanillyl and mandelic scaffold, the compound also functions as an intermediate in the synthesis of anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial candidates, as well as biodegradable polymers and specialty resins for medical and analytical applications.
