Applications
(2Z,6E)-Farnesyl acetate (CAS 40266-29-3) is a sesquiterpene ester used primarily in perfumery and cosmetics for its warm floral-fruity character and its role as a fixative, rounder and longevity booster; it can also act as a protected, slow-release form of farnesol in personal care formulations. In organic and terpene synthesis it serves as a convenient building block to access farnesyl derivatives such as halides, phosphates and carbamates for protein prenylation studies, bio-probe design, and assembly of side chains in ubiquinones, carotenoids and other sesquiterpenes; the 2Z,6E isomer is preferred where stereochemical definition matters because odor and bioactivity can be isomer-dependent. In flavor work it can contribute trace fruity, floral and honey-like nuances, has been investigated as a semiochemical for monitoring traps of certain insects, and is used as a reference standard in GC-MS analysis of isoprenoids. To stabilize this oxidation-prone ingredient in finished goods, formulators often employ microencapsulation, antioxidants and oxygen-limiting packaging.
