Applications
A high-boiling, hydrophobic sesquiterpene acetate, (2E,6Z)-farnesol acetate (CAS 24163-98-2) is applied mainly in perfumery to impart neroli–jasmine white-floral, honeyed and ripe fruity nuances and to act as a fixative/substantive note in fine fragrance, soaps, detergents, candles, and personal care; in flavor at trace levels to support tropical and peach–apricot facets and add roundness; as a synthetic intermediate in isoprenoid chemistry (protecting the farnesol OH, building the farnesyl chain for prenylated derivatives, serving as a precursor to farnesyl pyrophosphate analogs and selected terpenes); as a GC/MS reference/retention index marker for long-chain isoprenoids and as a carrier in controlled-release matrices; and it is also explored in insect lure/pest-management formulations as a representative long-chain acetate or formulation component, with use aligned to current fragrance/flavor safety guidelines.
