Applications
2,6,6-Trimethylcyclohexene-1-carboxylic acid is a versatile terpenoid building block used as an intermediate to synthesize flavor and fragrance ingredients (notably esters and amides that impart fruity–floral–woody nuances, or to introduce the 2,6,6-trimethylcyclohexenyl motif found in ionone/damascone-type structures), as a precursor in retinoid/carotenoid-inspired drug discovery, as an acylating partner after conversion to the acid chloride to append a bulky cyclohexenyl unit onto aromatics or polyols, as a raw material for functional esters, acrylates and urethanes in UV‑curable coatings, inks and adhesives to enhance hydrophobicity, durability and steric shielding, and as a model substrate in laboratories for studying carboxylate activation, C–C coupling, esterification/amidation and as an analytical reference standard.
