Applications
2-Octen-1-ol (2E) (CAS 18409-17-1) is an unsaturated C8 primary alcohol with green, fatty, citrus-peel facets, used as a fragrance ingredient to impart fresh, leafy nuances in fine perfumery, soaps, shampoos, detergents, and air care; in flavors it is applied at trace levels (where permitted) to lift citrus, apple, tea, vegetal and savory notes; synthetically, it serves as a versatile intermediate to 2‑octenyl esters (e.g., acetate, formate) for fragrance/solvent use and to nonionic ethoxylates for surfactant applications; its C=C functionality enables epoxidation and polymer modifications for UV-curable resins and reactive diluents; it can function as a coupling solvent/coalescent in inks and coatings; in analytical work, it is employed as a reference standard and aroma marker in GC–MS studies of essential oils, foods, and lipid oxidation; it has been reported as a minor natural volatile in some plant-derived aromas; storage with limited light/air is advised to mitigate oxidation and E/Z isomer changes.
